On 21st March 2015, The RIMBA Project organized a workshop to introduce our biggest event of the year—UM BIG YEAR. This workshop started at 10 a.m. at Rimba Ilmu. There were 21 people (excluding children) who attended this fascinating workshop that was conducted by Usman Hanif, a UM student. He gave a talk on bird identification—how to identify birds’ structures and recognize bird sounds. After that, he demonstrated this by leading those participants into Rimba Ilmu so the participants could experience Mother Nature as birdwatchers. Everyone was enthusiastic and deeply engrossed in looking for birds. Within a short afternoon session, we already spotted many bird species including Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Common Flameback, Black-naped Oriole, Spotted Dove, A pair of Zebra Doves, Asian Glossy Starling, Oriental Magpie Robin, Spotted Pigeon, Pacific Swallow, and Yellow-vented Bulbul.
And so, UM Big Year has begun! We welcome everyone to join (http://tinyurl.com/UMBYreg) and stay active by continuing to search for as many species of birds as possible and recording all of them (http://tinyurl.com/UMBYrecord). You are also encouraged to upload your pictures on Facebook or Instagram then hasttag #umbigyear, or emailing it to us at [email protected]. Also, join our discussion on Facebook or on our UM Big Year forum by sharing birding locations or if you need help identifying bird species. We welcome news about everyone’s progress!
Last but not least, we hope that every one of you enjoyed spending your precious time with us. We are truly grateful for you all to come all the way to UM to join us. Thank you for coming and we hope to see you again!
